The gap in travel information

Drug possession carries severe penalties, yet substances including designer drugs remain widely available across the island, a contradiction that has affected numerous foreign nationals. Once arrested, suspects enter a justice system where pre-trial detention can be prolonged, often accompanied by allegations of police misconduct and requests for bribes.
"Travelers deserve to know that a minor legal misstep in Mauritius can result in many years of detention without trial in conditions that fall absolutely short of basic human rights standards," states Jean Jacques, spokesperson for Foreign Prisoners Network. "Consular support often proves inadequate, leaving families desperate and detainees without effective recourse."
Systemic issues demand international scrutiny
